Scouting Reports- T

A-H / I-P / Q-Z

Joseph Barksdale                                                                                                                                   LSU

Large man with good bulk.  Has spent a lot of time in college on the left side but will have to stay on the right side in the NFL.  Is strong and has long arms.  Plays with decent knee bend but has really slow feet.  Will have trouble with speed off the corner, even for the right side.  Is slow out of his stance and struggles laterally.  Isn't real flexible and struggles to stay on blocks.  With his size and strength, at times he can be a really good run blocker.  Has some ability and you can't teach his size.  Is strictly a RT and will probably hear his name called in the middle rounds.

Byron Bell                                                                                                                                 New Mexico

Has good size and long arms.  Decent athlete who moves well.  Is not overly flexible but plays with decent knee bend.  At times though, he will play a little high.  Is not overly physical and is only an average run blocker despite his size.  You wish that he had a little more nastiness.  Will be a good developmental prospect.

Clint Boling                                                                                                                                       Georgia

Versatile performer who has good size and long arms.  Has the ability to play both inside and out.  Doesn't have the quickest feet for T but is smart and plays with good technique.  Isn't quick enough for the left side but can definitely play the right side.  Also does a solid job inside.  Doesn't always stay low when firing off the snap and ends up playing too high which causes him to get no movement in his run blocking.  Is not super quick so has only average ability to get to the second level.  Limited athlete who understands blocking angles and gives good effort.  Worst case scenario, he will be a great swing player who can back up RT and either G position but he will likely develop into a starter at one of those positions down the road.

Quintin Borders                                                                                                                           Union (NY)

Has good size and decent athletic ability.  Is really aggressive and seems to love to slug it out.  Plays extremely high.  Gets away with it most of the time on his level of competition but will be making a huge jump in competition and won't be able to get away with it on the next level.  Doesn't have good balance because he plays with no knee bend.  Developmental prospect who has good size, decent athletic ability and good demeanor but will need a lot of technique work.

Cameron Bradford                                                                                                              Grand Valley St

Has a good frame and has been highly successful on his level.  Doesn't play with good knee bend but has decent athleticism.  Struggled some with speed in the Cactus Bowl and could end up getting a look inside at G.  Could use some more bulk.  Is a terrible chop blocker.  Developmental prospect who has decent ability to work with but will also be making a big jump in competition.

Cory Brandon                                                                                                                               Oklahoma

Really looks the part with good length and bulk.  Has good athletic ability and is really light on his feet for a bigger guy.  Has terrible technique.  Is a waist bender and ducks his head a lot.  Doesn't play with good balance at all and ends up doing a lot of reaching and grabbing.  Isn't able to stick to blocks at all due to his technique.  He has good strength but lack of technique makes him look like he has no upper body strength at all.  Really struggles both as a pass protector and run blocker.  Managed to work his way from starter to off the 2-deep roster.  Physically has the ability to make an NFL roster but has a long way to go technique-wise, but I am sure someone will take a chance on him as an undrafted free agent.

James Brewer                                                                                                                                    Indiana

Big guy with long arms and good bulk.  Has good athleticism for someone his size.  Will flash some power and can be effective in the run game.  Is strictly a RT prospect.  Has average feet which are not good enough for the left side.  Can lock out defenders with his strength but sometimes struggles to get good position on quick defenders.  Really struggles with recognition and is susceptible to blitzes.  At times gets confused and ends up blocking nobody.  People like to compare him to former teammate Rodger Saffold but he isn't the prospect he was.  Still, he is a good prospect who has some size and ability and could possibly develop into a starting RT someday.

Marcus Cannon                                                                                                                                     TCU

Monster of a man with long arms.  Moves really well for such a large man.  Has decent feet and good quickness.  He is decent in pass protection because he has some quickness and he is so hard to get around.  Could also get a look at G but has the ability to also play RT on the next level.  He is a little slow off the snap and is more of a waist bender.  Is a good run blocker due to his size and strength.  Can be dominate if he plays with good bend.  Has enough quickness to get to the second level but really struggles to block in open space.  Is really big and he can't afford to get any bigger which is always a concern with an NFL paycheck.  Has good potential and can be a dominate player if he can be more consistent with his technique.

Gabe Carimi                                                                                                                                  Wisconsin

Large man with good height and bulk.  Played LT and will likely get drafted as a LT but I believe that he is a RT.  Possibly could play LT in run oriented teams but even still, he would be a better fit on the right side.  Like a lot of tall guys he has a tendency to play a little high.  He lacks quick feet and struggles with speed rushers off the edge.  He is strong and has strong hands.  In college he would get away with reaching out and grabbing to keep the defender from running by him.  Did a ton of holding that didn't get called but will be called on the next level.  The Big Ten is not loading with speed rushers off the edge but one with good quickness was Ryan Kerrigan who won the majority of one on one battles.  His feet and length are good for the right side.  He is also a good run blocker.  He has good strength, is physical and likes to finish his blocks.  Has the potential to be a really good RT but will likely get overdrafted to play LT, where he will struggle.

James Carpenter                                                                                                                             Alabama

Has good size and athleticism.  Really got better over the course of the season.  Late in 2009 it looked like he was no more than a RT but as the past season wore on he began to look like he could be a LT on the next level.  Has good arm length.  Moves his feet well and plays with good knee bend.  Doesn't do it as often as he used to but at times he will get overextended but he has the athletic ability to recover.  Is a good run blocker.  Has good knee bend and a flat back.  Has good strength and does a good job driving defender down the field.  Does a good job sticking to his blocks.  Has really improved and has the ability to potentially develop into a starting LT.  Is a relatively safe pick because even if he struggles to make it at LT, he could easily move to RT or even G.

Anthony Castonzo                                                                                                                Boston College

Has good height and long arms.  Plays with good technique.  Has good knee bend and plays with a flat back.  Good initial quickness.  Does a good job getting his hands on defenders and can lock them out.  Has a good punch and shows good patience by not biting on fakes.  Has good strength and anchors alright.  Will get pushed back from time to time because he lacks bulk.  Is thin in the lower body and at times can get knocked off his pins.  Once in a while will get overextended but not often.  Good job as a run blocker.  Good strength and is fairly physical.  Can get to the second level and does a good job sealing off LBs.  Has experience and good technique which makes him the most NFL ready T in the draft.  Has the ability to play on the left or right side.  Is a good athlete but isn't elite so he has a limited upside, especially compared to some of the other tackles in the draft.

Nick Claytor                                                                                                                            Georgia Tech

Really surprised by coming out early.  Has a good frame but really lacks bulk.  Has good athletic ability and can run.  Has good quickness and long arms.  Became the starter during the middle of this past season and is really raw.  Doesn't have good technique.  Is a waist bender and he often stops his feet.  Combine that with his lack of bulk and he really struggles to get any movement in run blocking and he struggles in pass protection.  Due to Georgia Tech not passing a lot, he doesn't have a lot of experience in pass protection.  He has some athletic ability but is really raw and will need a ton of work in addition to time to add bulk.  Quite possibly could be too much of a project to get a chance.

Josh Davis                                                                                                                                        Georgia

Has good size with long arms.  Has slow feet and struggles in pass protection but really struggles with speed off the corner.  Plays a little high.  Spends too much time on the ground.  Is not the most dominating run blocker because he lacks athletic ability.  Could get a look inside at G.  Really looks the part but looks better than he plays.

J'Michael Deane                                                                                                                       Michigan St

RT with good size.  Is a little stiff and upright.  Is not overly quick and has slow feet.  Struggles some in pass protection but gives good effort.  Has good strength and is a decent run blocker.  Likely to get a look as an undrafted free agent.

Ray Dominguez                                                                                                                              Arkansas

Has really good size.  Has a tendency to be a waist bender and duck his head.  Lacks quickness and has slow feet.  Struggles in pass protection with speed.  Has a tendency to struggle in both run and pass blocking against quick defenders.  Struggles in open space.  Has some strength but isn't a real physical run blocker.  Almost seemed to regress this past season.  Might have to move inside to G but will likely get a look at RT first.  Likely will get invited to camp as an undrafted guy but will struggle to make a roster.

Tyler Donahue                                                                                                                      Bowling Green

Has good height and long arms.  Could use a little more bulk.  Is not overly athletic but isn't a complete stiff.  Technique is inconsistent.  At times he is a waist bender or he will play too high.  Doesn't have quick feet and struggles in pass protection.  Has good strength and can be effective if he can get his hands on the defender.  Gives good effort and will battle.  Decent college performer who might lack athleticism to make it.

Perry Dorrestein                                                                                                                            Michigan

Big guy who has a tendency to play too high.  Has slow feet and struggles moving laterally.  Struggles in pass protection.  Is a decent run blocker.  Has good strength and runs ok in a straight line.  Good college player who might lack the athletic ability needed for the next level.

Marcus Gilbert                                                                                                                                   Florida

Large man with decent athleticism.  Moves well laterally and has a decent punch.  Is hard to get around.  Big guy who struggles to redirect.  Struggles with quick defenders.  Is a good positional blocker who can get to the second level.  Has the potential to be a dominant run blocker if he becomes more physical and tries to finish blocks.  Looks the part as a RT and will likely hear his name called in the middle rounds.

Adam Grant                                                                                                                                       Arizona

Large man who is better suited for the right side.  Moves surprisingly well for a large man.  Has strong, long arms.  Plays pretty high and doesn't have good knee bend which saps some of his athleticism.  Struggles some with quickness and has a real difficult time readjusting.  So he struggles with speed around the corner and with inside moves.  Anchors well if he can get on a defender squarely.  Has some ability as a run blocker.  Seemed to regress some as the season wore on.  Likely will get a chance but probably as an undrafted guy.

Cody Habben                                                                                                                              Washington

Has good height and long arms.  Lacks bulk and doesn't have real fast feet.  Despite that, he did a decent job in pass protection.  Has long arms and defenders struggle to get off his blocks when he gets his hands on them.  Has good strength and is physical.  Gives good effort in run blocking.  For some reason lost starting job for a couple of games in middle of season but was quickly put back in game because the line was much better with him in the lineup.  Despite his lack of athleticism he was pretty productive which will likely give him a shot as an undrafted free agent.

Kyle Hix                                                                                                                                               Texas

Large man who has some strength.  Doesn't have the feet for LT but could be decent enough for RT in some schemes.  Could also get a look at G.  Has slow feet and struggles laterally.  Plays with decent knee bend.  This past season he showed some explosiveness off the snap in short yardage situations, at times burying defenders.  Had good strength in the run game which makes a move to G a possible option.  Improved as a prospect this past year and will likely get an invite to camp.

Kevin Hughes                                                                                                                          SE Louisiana

Looks the part.  Has good size and long arms.  Runs well and is a good athlete.  Has decent feet but will have to improve them in order to stay on the left side.  Has the ability to move to the right side or even inside to G.  Plays with a wide base and decent knee bend.  Has a decent punch and can be physical.  Doesn't always play with good balance.  Will be making a jump in competition.  Good developmental prospect who is a little underrated.
