Scouting Reports- S

A-H / I-P / Q-Z

Mistral Raymond                                                                                                                    South Florida

Has decent height but lacks bulk.  Played CB but doesn't have the athleticism to stay there.  Aggressive player who can be physical despite lack of bulk.  Has decent speed and is an ok tackler.  Makes plays on the ball and should have had a bunch of INTs this past season but doesn't have very good hands.  Lack of size could be an issue but he has a chance to make it as an extra DB.

Andrew Rich                                                                                                                                           BYU

Big, physical hitter in the secondary.  Is a factor against the run but struggles in coverage.  Is stiff and has marginal speed.  He struggles to get over to help in coverage.  At the least he can help on special teams and can serve as a backup.

Robert Sands                                                                                                                          West Virginia

Super tall S who looks more like a LB.  Fairly fluid athlete.  Is tough and physical and will come up against the run quickly.  Really effective up close to the line of scrimmage.  Is a solid tackler.  Can be a little overaggressive and will bite on play fakes.  Has good speed but is so tall and leggy that he struggles to change direction some.  Is a long strider.  Will never be great in coverage but could be a great player for a team looking for an in the box type.

Tyler Sash                                                                                                                                              Iowa

Has good size and is a decent athlete.  Is not elite but has decent speed and change of direction.  Smart player who has really good instincts.  Is always around the ball.  Physical player who will come up and make the tackle against the run.  Is better going forward rather than in reverse and is better against the run.  Has decent hands.  Sometimes he doesn't take real good angles in coverage.  Solid player who is smart and will be a solid pro.

Da'Norris Searcy                                                                                                                  North Carolina

Has good size and athleticism.  Is a good athlete who has a lot of range.  Was solid in coverage.  Has good feet and pretty good change of direction.  Is all over the field and is usually around the ball.  Did a solid job tackling and made a lot of plays.  Also has experience as a return guy.  Can help on special teams and is a solid al-around S who can step in and help early on.

Davonte Shannon                                                                                                                              Buffalo

Has marginal size but plays bigger than he is.  Physical and aggressive.  Will sometimes overpursue.  Delivers some big hits but doesn't always wrap up.  Lacks speed and struggles in coverage.  Has the mentality to play special teams.

J.C. Sherritt                                                                                                                  Eastern Washington

Small school LB who lacks the size to stay at LB.  Lacks ideal height for S.  Really productive and dominant player on his level.  Has outstanding instincts, some of the best in the draft.  Is always around the ball and is a decent tackler.  Has marginal speed and is making a jump in competition, but has been too productive to dismiss.

Mana Silva                                                                                                                                         Hawaii

Has good size and speed.  Runs around the field like a human missile, coming up and laying some big hits.  Has good quickness and speed and makes a lot of tackles against the run near the line of scrimmage.  Has enough speed to get to the sideline in coverage.  Has good hands for the INT.  Plays an aggressive brand of football but isn't out of control.  Really underrated player who has a chance to be a starter down the road.

David Sims                                                                                                                                         Iowa St

Short S with good bulk who flies around the field hitting people.  Is always around the ball and can deliver some big blows.  He has decent speed and athleticism.  Competes.  Will miss some tackles due to his size.  There is some concern about whether or not he could hold up physically.

Erik Stoll                                                                                                                                         Montana

Has marginal size.  Has decent speed and athleticism.  Has good instincts and reactions that put him in the right position.  Does a pretty good job tackling and breaks down well in space.  Is fairly physical.  Will be making a jump in competition and lacks elite ability but he was extremely productive and has good ability.

Max Suter                                                                                                                                       Syracuse

Is a little undersized.  Has decent instincts and is typically around the ball.  Struggles a little in coverage because he is a little stiff and he lacks closing speed.  Good college player with average ability who will have to contribute on special teams if he wants a chance.

Justin Taplin-Ross                                                                                                                                 Utah

Has good size and almost looks more like a LB.  Has decent straight line speed but is a little stiff and struggles in coverage.  Is more of a run stopper.  Disappears for stretches.  Could be a good special teams player.

Jerrard Tarrant                                                                                                                       Georgia Tech

Has good size.  Has good athletic ability and decent speed.  Is a little high in his backpedal.  He has a tendency to make big plays.  Is an inconsistent tackler and at times really struggles to break down in the open field to make a tackle.  Has played some CB and has returned some kicks.  Might not get a look in either of those areas but it is a testament to his athletic ability.  Better athlete than player at this point but is a good developmental prospect.

Rickey Thenarse                                                                                                                           Nebraska

Has good size and decent athleticism.  Is physical and does a good job coming up against the run.  Struggles a little in coverage.  Missed 2009 due to a knee injury and was suspended for the bowl game this past season for DUI.

Jay Valai                                                                                                                                       Wisconsin

Short S with some bulk.  Physical player who really likes to deliver big hits.  Is generally around the ball.  Often goes for big hit rather than worry about wrapping up and will miss a number of tackles.  Will also overpursue on plays.  Is a little stiff in the hips and doesn't have great speed.  He struggles in coverage.  Will come up with a big play from time to time which will get him some attention but overall his play is underwhelming.  Is a little overrated and will have to be more productive to make it.

Winston Venable                                                                                                                              Boise St

Short and thick.  Is a bit of a tweener, being a little undersized for LB and lacking some athleticism for S.  Could get a look at either position.  Is a really physical player who likes to come up and punish the ball carrier.  Is stiff and doesn't have great speed.  Really struggles in coverage.  Can be a great special teams player and could win a spot on a roster doing that.

Anthony Walters                                                                                                                            Delaware

Played CB this past season and has experience at all four DB spots.  Could get a look at any of the spots but might be best at S.  Has good size and athleticism.  Has good football smarts.  Shows good hands for the INT and has decent feet.  Has some closing ability.  Does a decent job tackling.  Will be making a jump in competition but has good ability and should be a good developmental guy.

Deunta Williams                                                                                                                   North Carolina

Has good size and athleticism.  Was better his junior year than he was his senior year.  Is not overly physical and won't make any big hits.  Didn't always bring his arms when he was tackling.  Also missed a number of tackles due to taking poor angles or due to overpursueing.  Started the season with a lot of fanfare but his play on the field was not overly exciting.  Suffered a broken leg late in the season

Nate Williams                                                                                                                             Washington

Has decent size.  Good run stopper who is really physical.  Is always around the ball and makes a ton of plays.  Good tackler.  Quick coming up to help against the run.  Has marginal speed and lacks range in coverage.  Plays faster than he times but he is still an in the box type.  Has the right mentality to be a good special teams player.

Trey Womack                                                                                                                                   Virginia

Undersized guy who will come up and hit.  Has decent speed but struggles some in coverage.  Good college player who might lack special ability needed for the next level.
