Scouting Reports- QB

A-H / I-P / Q-Z

Brian Anderson                                                                                                                               Marshall

Has decent size and at times can make things happen with his feet.  Has been really inconsistent.  At times seems to have a good handle on the game but other times struggles to get the offense in synch.  Not overly accurate and lacks some arm strength.  Didn't always get a lot of help from his receivers.  Release is a little long.  Has good toughness but has marginal ability for the next level.

Austen Arnaud                                                                                                                                   Iowa St

Was having a decent season until he suffered a serious knee injury, which is a big concern going forward.  Had total knee reconstruction surgery.  He showed some potential and was developing.  He has good size and some athletic ability.  He was a little more consistent this past season but still struggled with consistency.  At times was really accurate and at times really struggled with accuracy.  Seemed to struggle some with pressure situations and seemed to try to do too much.  Has decent arm strength but also has some wasted motion in his mechanics which can slow down his release.  Motion also effects his accuracy at times.  Has ability to get yards in the open field.  Looked like he was developing into a decent developmental prospect but knee injury might keep him from getting a chance.

Matt Barr                                                                                                                            Western Illinois

Solid small college player who might lack ability for the next level.  He lacks size and lacks arm strength.  Doesn't look like he has the necessary skills to make the jump in competition but he has some athletic ability, really competes and has good toughness.

K.J. Black                                                                                                                       Prairie View A&M

Looks the part and has a lot of potential but has a long way to go.  Has good height and can run.  Wasn't 100% healthy all year but he played through and competed.  Really struggles with his mechanics which affects everything.  Footwork is all over the place.  It is the main cause for his lack of accuracy and his lack of consistent zip on the ball.  When he has solid footwork he shows good arm strength, but sometimes his footwork causes him to short arm the ball.  He really struggles to throw the ball to his left because of his footwork.  At times shows a decent release but it all depends on his lower half.  Has ability but is going to require a lot of work and time.

Blake Bolles                                                                                                                       NW Missouri St

Highly successful QB on the DII level.  Led team to National Championship his junior year and led team to the semi-finals his senior year.  Has good height but lacks some bulk.  Not overly athletic but does a lot of the little things well like move around in the pocket and selling play action.  Smart player who had good understanding of his offense.  Didn't play in a pro style offense and is making a big jump in competition.  Will have to make a big adjustment.  Made a lot of throws on his level that he won't get away with on next level.  Has decent arm strength and release.  At times can get rattled and lock onto receivers like he did in the semi-finals this past season which resulted in three ints.  Has some ability to possibly develop into a backup down the road but will need time to adjust to the increase in competition.

Diondre Borel                                                                                                                                    Utah St

Really lacks ideal size for next level.  Only has marginal arm strength and at times really struggles with accuracy.  Has good athleticism and can make things happen with his feet.  Could get a look at RB or WR but might lack size for RB as well.  Has good leadership skills.

Jacob Bower                                                                                                                              McNeese St

Has good size.  Older player who transferred from Tulsa.  Is Morman and served a two year mission trip during college career.  Had a decent season.  Never was able to take the reins at Tulsa.  Decent college player who doesn't seem like much of a prospect, especially due to his age.

Ben Chappell                                                                                                                                     Indiana

Has good size and is one of the toughest college QBs I have ever seen.  I have never seen a player take a beating like Chappell did this year against Illinois in my entire life.  He got hit on about 90% of their plays and despite that he never flinched in the pocket, standing tall with his eyes down the field.  The OL play for Indiana was terrible all year and eventually Chappell's body couldn't take the pounding anymore but he showed tremendous toughness and was fairly durable considering the number of hits he took.  He is obviously very competitive and has some fire in him.  He isn't overly athletic but seems to find a way to get yards with his feet.  He has good arm strength and a decent release.  At times his competitive nature gets the best of him and he will force throws.  Isn't always consistently accurate but some of that might be due to dealing with constant pressure.  Team really struggled when he wasn't in the game.  He makes his team better.  Probably a little underrated.  The type of player who comes into camp as an undrafted free agent, makes the team and has a long career as a solid backup who can step in and spot start.

Omar Clayton                                                                                                                                      UNLV

Has really good athletic ability.  Lacks height which is magnified due to the fact that he throws 3/4s.  His release is a little long and his accuracy is inconsistent.  Doesn't get a lot of help from his receivers but he also doesn't do a real good job reading defenses.  Will force a lot of throws.  Can make things happen with his feet.  Doesn't really have enough size for RB.

Carson Coffman                                                                                                                            Kansas St

He has decent size and arm strength.  Neither is elite but are good enough.  This past season he was a really solid college QB.  Has good leadership abilities and showed some toughness.  Had a real good handle on the offense and did a solid job getting team out of bad plays and into good plays.  Throws the ball with good anticipation and is pretty accurate.  He has a decent release.  He is more athletic than you would think and makes some plays with his feet.  At times he does lock onto his receivers.  Everything about him physically is marginal but he is smart and competitive and could possibly develop into a good backup.

Ryan Colburn                                                                                                                                 Fresno St

Has good size and shows some leadership abilities.  Lacks athletic ability and arm strength.  Release is a little long.  Accuracy is inconsistent but he will make some good throws from time to time.  At times he shows good touch on the ball.  Struggles with accuracy when he is pressured.  Really struggled against Boise St due to pressure.  Needs to have good protection to be effective.  Might not have enough ability to make it on the next level but could get a chance.

Nate Costa                                                                                                                                         Oregon

Never had the opportunity to be the guy at Oregon.  Lacks size and has a history of knee injuries, one in 2008 which cost him a chance to be the starter and then again this past season.  Has some athletic ability and has a high completion percentage over the course of his career.  Doesn't have a lot of experience and most of his playing time has come against lesser competition.  Has average arm strength and a decent release.  Is well respected by his teammates.  Has shown good hands as a holder for extra points and field goals.

Andy Dalton                                                                                                                                           TCU

Has decent size but not great size.  Has a slightly above average arm.  Is really smart and is a winner.  He finished his college career with a 42-6 record while only losing once in the last two years.  He really understands the offense and typically goes to the correct receiver.  Every now and then this works against him because he will have the tendency to lock onto receivers.  He can make all types of throws from all types of platforms and he is really accurate.  He has good anticipation and can throw the ball with good touch.  His lack of elite arm strength might cause him some problems downfield but he figures to be a good fit for a west coast type offense.  His lack of elite height combined with his 3/4 delivery could be an issue but he understands passing windows and has a quick release.  He isn't a a plus athlete but he can get some yards with his feet.  He moves ok in the pocket but needs to do a better job protecting the ball.  He lacks elite physical traits but he is a winner and figures to develop into a solid QB on the next level.

Pat Devlin                                                                                                                                       Delaware

Really looks the part, really tall with good bulk.  Transferred from Penn St.  He has above average arm strength and gets good RPMs on the ball.  Stands tall in the pocket and can make all the NFL throws.  Has a quick release and throws a good spiral.  Has decent athletic ability for his size.  Draws comparisons to Joe Flacco but he isn't as developed as a passer as Flacco was.  While he looks the part and has exciting physical skills, his play doesn't always match his ability.  While at times he will make really nice passes, he really struggles with accuracy.  He doesn't always throw the ball with confidence and has a tendency to short arm throws over the middle of the field.  He also doesn't seem to have great awareness and will struggle some with reading defenses.  He has a tendency to hold onto the ball too long and doesn't do a good job of moving in the pocket.  Instead of carrying a high grade like Flacco did, Devlin figures to be more of a developmental type who has really good physical qualities.  So he figures to be more like John Skelton last year, a fifth round type that will need time to develop.

Chris Dieker                                                                                                                       Southern Illinois

Has good size and decent arm strength.  Has a quick release and at times will make some really good throws.  Unfortunately he lacks consistency and isn't always accurate.  He has some athletic ability and can buy some time in the pocket.  He is also really strong and hard to bring down.  Shows good toughness and will stand in there and make a throw while getting hit.  Has some ability but he doesn't wow you at all physically and was inconsistent against lower level competition.

Ricky Dobbs                                                                                                                                         Navy

Good leader and has been a winner.  He lacks some height and only has average arm strength.  Has an average release and at times struggles with accuracy.  Has really good athletic ability but isn't purely a runner playing QB; he is more of a QB that can run.  He doesn't always look to run and keeps his eyes downfield.  He doesn't play in a complex throwing scheme and despite that he still struggles to throw to the right receiver.  Doesn't always show patience as a QB and at times will get greedy.  Probably too big of a project to get a look at QB but he has some bulk and could also get a look at RB; however, he doesn't show a lot of running back skills.

Nate Enderle                                                                                                                                        Idaho

Has good size and arm strength.  While not a stiff he is not overly athletic.  He is strictly a pocket passer who at times struggles to get away from pressure.  Didn't get a lot of help from his teammates which helped his play deteriorate.  He played a lot better his junior year than he did his senior year.  During his senior year his play seemed to get worse as the season went on.  With the lack of pass protection he developed happy feet which helped compound the issues he already had.  Is a very streaky passer.  He is a rhythm passer who often pats the ball or moves his hands up and down before he throws the ball.  This wasted motion makes his release long and leaves him susceptible to INTs.  Often when he has a lot of upper body motion it also makes him inaccurate.  When his upper body is quiet he can be fairly accurate but when the rhythm of the play is disrupted his upper body starts moving to create rhythm, which is when things start to fall apart.  He also needs to do a better job protecting the ball when he is in the pocket.  He has some ability but will need time to iron out mechanics and to get right mentally.

Zack Eskridge                                                                                                                       Midwestern St

Has good size and a decent release.  Dominated his level of competition but will be making a huge leap in competition.  Lacks arm strength and doesn't get a lot of RPMs on the ball.  Played in a spread offense where the majority of his throws were swing passes.  Wasn't asked to make any NFL type throws in this system.  Good college QB who probably doesn't have the ability to play on the next level.

Zach Frazer                                                                                                                                 Connecticut

Really had kind of a roller coaster type career.  Transferred from Notre Dame.  Started this past season but played so poorly he was dropped to third string.  Later in season got an opportunity to play due to a suspension and an injury and played much better.  Has good size and arm strength.  Durability and poor play have kept him bouncing in and out of the lineup throughout his career.  Has a long release and really struggles with accuracy.  Had better accuracy at the end of this past season but they still didn't let him air out the ball a lot, preferring to hand the ball off to Jordan Todman a lot.  Has a decent arm but needs lots of work.

Adam Froman                                                                                                                                Louisville

Has good size and athletic ability.  Can make things happen with his feet.  Has decent arm strength but it is masked by his struggles to throw a tight spiral.  Doesn't always get a lot of RPMs on the ball and will throw a lot of balls that flutter.  Lacks some experience because he didn't start playing QB until his junior year in high school.  Shows good leadership and has some spunk about him.  Really improved as this past season wore on but still struggled some with accuracy.  Missed last four games on the season due to a thigh injury.  Looks like an interesting developmental prospect.  Has some intangibles and raw ability, just needs a lot of development.

Blaine Gabbert                                                                                                                                Missouri

Has really good size and arm strength.  Has good height and bulk but is pretty athletic for his size.  He can make things happen with his feet and can be hard to bring down in the open field.  He has good arm strength and a good release.  He can make all the throws but could do a better job with his touch on underneath routes.  Missouri's spread system is not overly complex so an NFL style offense is going to be a big adjustment.  In his college system he also didn't have to make a lot of NFL throws.  He was fairly accurate with the throws that they asked him to make.  The biggest question mark for Gabbert is going to be running a complex system and reading complex defenses.  He doesn't show a lot of anticipation and often throws the ball late.  This wasn't a big deal in college but will be a big deal on the next level.  He also doesn't seem to do a real good job reading defenses.  There will be a big learning curve but it is also important to keep in mind that he really doesn't have a ton of experience, being the starter for only two years.  One other issue is that at times he has a tendency to lower his eyes to look to run when he feels pressure.  Physically, he looks like the ideal QB and there is a lot to like about him.  He is easily the top QB in the draft, it is just going to take some time to develop.  He has some boom or bust to him but he looks like he could develop into a really good QB.

Taylor Harris                                                                                                                  West Texas A&M

Has decent but not great height.  Has decent bulk and arm strength.  Had a good career on his level.  Is a pretty good athlete who moves around well in the pocket.  Displays average accuracy and really seems to struggle some reading coverages.  Has a tendency to force some balls.  Will be making a jump in competition.  Good college QB who might not be special enough to make it on the next level.

Mike Hartline                                                                                                                                Kentucky

Tall but still has decent athletic ability.  Really improved as the season wore on.  Was really accurate and managed game well.  Wasn't asked to throw the ball down the field much.  Is a better fit for a west coast type offense because he lacks arm strength to throw the ball downfield.  Has a decent release.  On the field he was cool under pressure.  Shows good pocket awareness and does a good job taking care of the ball.  Missed bowl game due to suspension for being arrested for disorderly conduct and public intoxication.  Was on the upswing as a possible developmental guy for a west coast offense before letting his team down with his arrest.

Kyle Havens                                                                                                                         Massachusetts

Has good size and a decent release.  Only has average arm strength and has inconsistent accuracy.  Isn't going to beat you with his feet but can buy some time in the pocket.  Will be making a jump in competition.  Decent college player who might not be special enough to make it on the next level.

Michael Herrick                                                                                                               Northern Arizona

Is a little undersized.  Has decent arm strength and is able to get some RPMs on the ball.  Release is a little long which might cause him troubles throwing the ball down the field.  With his arm strength he is more of a west coast offense type guy.  Shows good anticipation and does a good job throwing receivers open.  Seems to have a good understanding of the QB position but will be making a jump in competition and only has average physical skills.

Cameron Higgins                                                                                                                           Weber St

Has decent size.  Is athletic and can buy time with his feet or get some yards.  Has good arm strength but wasn't asked to throw the ball downfield a lot in this system.  Has a quick release but his release is low which makes him susceptible to tipped passes.  Played against Boston College this past season and wasn't fazed by the competition.  Really needs work on his footwork.  He doesn't always set his feet when he throws.  Struggles some with accuracy.  Has some raw ability but needs some development.
