Scouting Reports- CB Chris Randle Utah St Has decent size and athletic ability. Has decent but not great speed. Was decent in coverage in the WAC. Will likely get a shot as an undrafted guy. Dominique Reese Georgia Tech Has good size. Has decent athleticism for CB but pretty good athleticism for S. Has played both positions and could get a look at either. This past year at CB he struggled a little in coverage. Needs some more technique development so that he can have tighter coverage. Is a good tackler. Could be a good special teams player. Played through nagging injuries the past two seasons. Will get a look as an undrafted guy but has a chance due to his versatility. Reggie Rembert Air Force Is really undersized. Lacks height and has decent bulk. Competes and has decent speed. His lack of height could be a real problem. Under normal circumstances he would get a shot as an undrafted guy but he has a military commitment and teams might not commit to someone with his lack of size. Jamal Robinson Houston Has average size. Has marginal speed and his coverage was inconsistent. Had games where he was beaten often and had other games where he was ok. Struggles to make plays on the ball and doesn't get off blocks well. Doesn't seem like much of a prospect but might get a chance. Justin Rogers Richmond Dominated his level in 2008 and teams have for the most part stayed away from him. Since that year he hasn't really taken his game to the next level and become that shut down corner. It doesn't seem like he has improved much and he can be lulled to sleep. Often his coverage was too soft and he gave too much cushion. He lacks size and isn't a good tackler. On the positive side he has a lot of athletic ability showing good feet and a smooth backpedal. He has really good hands and will attack the ball like a WR. He has good speed and quickness. He is a good return guy and can contribute in that area on the next level. At the Shrine Bowl he didn't look out of place at all. Looks like he could be a return guy who plays nickel, with the potential to develop into a starter down the road. Brandian Ross Youngstown St Has good size and decent speed. Plays a little high and lacks some closing ability and struggles a little changing direction. At times he gives too much cushion. He is a good physical tackler and could get a look at S. Contributes on special teams and if he gets a chance, this is where he will have to contribute while he develops. Calvin Rubles Kansas Has good size and long arms. Really lacks speed and has slow feet. More of a cover two type CB who can hold up the receiver at the line of scrimmage. Could also get a look at S Chris L. Rucker Michigan St Experienced performer in the Big Ten. Is really physical and will make the big hit. Has a good understanding of coverage and has good instincts. Has marginal speed at best and might end up getting a look at S. Is a good tackler and can help on special teams. Was a potential late round pick but will probably be undrafted due to some off the field concerns. Was suspended for the bowl game in 2009 for being a suspect in a dorm assault and missed a game this past year due to a DUI. Kevin Rutland Missouri Has good size and athleticism. Has good feet and has really good hands and coordination. Has decent but not great speed. Has good height and long arms. Changes direction well. Coverage is a little up and down. Is a better athlete than player right now. Needs to improve technique which will help cover up his lack of great speed. Didn't do a great job tackling and will have to improve there. Developmental project who has great athletic ability. Figures to hear his name late in the draft. Richard Sherman Stanford Former WR who has good size and athleticism. Has decent speed and will compete. Still learning technique and nuances. Is a little stiff and struggles in transition. It isn't horrible for such a tall player but he struggles against quicker receivers. Has long arms and catches the ball well. Not afraid to be physical. Missed much of the 2008 season due to knee injury. Good developmental prospect. Jamie Short Norfolk St Has good size and athletic ability. Will make plays on the ball. Is pretty good in coverage and is a decent tackler against the run. Has marginal speed. Decent developmental type who has the size to also get a look at S. Travis Simmons East Carolina Is a little undersized. Has average speed and athleticism. Competes but doesn't always have tight coverage. Undrafted guy who could get a look as a backup DB. Buster Skrine Chattanooga Undersized small school player who has big time speed. Track guy whose speed translates onto the field. Has good closing ability. Will be making a big jump in competition. Struggled a little against better competition. Is aggressive and at times will bite on double moves. With his size he sometimes struggles to get off blocks and will miss some tackles. Really good athlete who could use some development and might be able to help as a return guy. Chris Smith Northern Illinois Undersized but really physical corner. Will come up and make plays against the run. Lacks height and struggles a little changing direction. Shows some quickness and closing ability but really lacks speed. Cover two type because he can't run with anyone down the field. Doesn't look that part but has been fairly productive and might get a chance. Jimmy Smith Colorado Really looks the part of the ideal CB. Is tall with long arms but has really good speed and change of direction. Is a really fluid athlete, especially for someone his height. Has good feet and closing ability. Has been a shutdown corner. Has great confidence and isn't afraid to be physical. Will come up and make plays against the run and will jam the receiver at the line of scrimmage. Is a extremely talented corner and the only thing getting in his way is the off the field concerns. He has twice been arrested for minor in possession and has reportedly failed a number of drug tests. It is important to note that all these took place in 2007 and there hasn't been any known issues since. He has the potential to be a shutdown corner in the NFL and is a top15 talent but will likely get drafted in the late first round area. Brandon Stephens Miami (OH) Has good size and marginal athleticism. Cover two type corner who has decent change of direction and instincts in a limited area. In a short to intermediate area he has good coverage and will make plays on the ball, typically knocking the ball area rather than intercepting it. Really lacks speed and can't run with anyone. At times will struggle with jump balls. Is a good tackler and could possible help on special teams. Has to be in the right system but could get a look. Jason Teague TCU Has good height and long arms. Is physical and will jam the receiver at the line of scrimmage as well as come up against the run. Is a little tight in the hips and doesn't have good recovery speed. Will give up some big plays because he can't turn and run well. Needs to add some bulk. Has some ability but will need some time to develop. Missed time in 2008 due to a knee injury. Josh Thomas Buffalo Has decent size and athleticism. Isn't elite in any area but is good in every area and is feisty. Plays with good knee bend and has good change of direction. Is really physical and plays with a good motor. Has good closing ability. Is a little underrated and could be a really good nickel back and special teams player and has an outside chance of developing into a starter. Brandyn Thompson Boise St Undersized corner who has decent athleticism. Lacks height and bulk but really competes. Has average speed and athletic ability. Due to his limited athleticism and size his coverage is a little up and down. Will make a number of big plays and will give up a number of big plays. Despite size he will come up against the run. Has marginal ability but will likely find a role as an extra DB and a special teams player. Devon Torrence Ohio St Has good size but lacks speed. Plays faster than he times but isn't fast enough to recover from mistakes. At times he will play on his heels or struggle in transition and can't make up for it. Can get a little lazy and give up too much cushion. Has decent feet and hips. Will come up and make plays against the run. Two sport star who might also have a future in baseball. Decent player who could have a future as an extra DB. DeMarcus Van Dyke Miami (Fla) Really started to put it all together this past season. Has good height but is really skinny. Has elite speed, a lot of which translates onto the field. Can run with anyone and really improved his coverage skills. Shows good closing ability and solid feet. Really lacks size and needs time to get stronger and put on some bulk. Struggles in the run game and with bigger, more physical receivers. If he can add strength and bulk he could potentially develop into a good starting CB. Darrin Walls Notre Dame Has decent size and athleticism. Lacks speed and closing ability but has good feet. Likes to be physical but lacks bulk and strength and will struggle to get off blocks. Has decent coverage if he doesn't have to cover too much ground, more of a cover two type. Is a little inconsistent in coverage and lacks the bulk to move to S. Can contribute on special teams. Missed 2008 with personal issues. Demond Washington Auburn Really lacks size but has good speed. Is short and doesn't jump well so he tends to struggle with bigger receivers. Isn't afraid to be physical but his size hurts him when tackling. Is a decent kick returner. Looks more like an extra DB who might have to contribute on special teams to make it. DeAngelo Wilkinson Colorado St Has marginal size and decent athleticism. Has decent speed and flashes some closing ability. Is physical and will come up and make tackles against the run. Was decent in coverage on his level of competition but only has average ability for the next level. Was slow to recover from an ankle injury this past year and struggled with a shoulder injury in 2007. In 2008 he was suspended after being charged with two charges of assault from a bar incident. Has been productive enough to get a shot but with the off the field and injury concerns he might not. Aaron Williams Texas Has good size and long arms. Is really athletic for someone his size. Has good feet and speed. Is fairly fluid but doesn't always show good balance and at times he will play a little high and struggle in transition. Is fairly physical but doesn't dominate the line of scrimmage like you would think for someone his size. He can make plays on the ball and will come away with a nice INT every now and then but in general he has pretty poor hands. Has typically played over the slot and doesn't have a lot of experience outside. Has the size and athleticism to get a look at S as well. In either case he has unique athletic ability but will need some time to develop. Shareece Wright USC Has good size and is physical. Will come up and make tackles against the run and has good understanding of his role in run defense. Has good athleticism. Is pretty fluid with good hips and feet. This past season was really his first as a starter so he is still a little inexperienced. Best football may still be ahead of him. Struggled to get on the field due to injuries and off the field issues. Was charged with resisting a police officer at a party in 2008. He missed most of the 2008 season due to a hairline fracture in his neck. Missed the 2009 season due to being academically ineligible. To his credit he gained eligibility back in time for the bowl game and played well, showing that he at least kept himself ready during the suspension. Solid player who has the potential to develop into a starter down the road. |
