Scouting Reports- CB Isa Abdul-Quddus Fordham Is a tweener. Has played both CB and S. Was good but not dominated at both positions despite playing lower level competition. Has good change of direction. For S he has good speed but it might be a little marginal at CB. Likes to rely on his speed which works on his level but won't on next level. Is kind of skinny and at times he will shy away from contact which will be an issue if he plays at S. He also misses a number of tackles. He shows a little closing ability and contributes on special teams. More of an undrafted guy who will battle for a nickel back/special teams role. Cortez Allen Citadel Has good size. Has a lot of length with height, long arms and good leaping ability. Is a really fluid athlete. Runs well and is decent changing direction for a taller corner. At times will get a little high and will lose a little in transition. Has really good feet. Wasn't tested much on his level and will be making a big jump in competition but performed really well at the Shrine game. Missed 2007 with a knee injury. Developmental prospect with the potential to develop into a starter down the road. Should get consideration in the middle rounds. Prince Amukamara Nebraska Has really good size. Shows tremendous closing ability for someone his size. Has good athleticism, showing good hips and anticipation. Has good speed. Is willing to be physical and will come up against the run. Shows really good effort against the run, refusing to stay blocked and willing to chase down a tackle. Has the ability to play man and zone. Is solid in coverage but this past season he seemed to give up one big play where he wouldn't look like an elite prospect. It wasn't like it was horrible but in order to be the true shut down corner he believes he can be, he will need to eliminate that. Even so, he is easily a first round talent who figures to be an above average CB in the NFL with the potential to be better than that. C.J. Bailey Southern Miss Is a little undersized. Competitive player. Has good instincts and has some closing speed. Has decent feet and typically has tight coverage. Lacks great speed and might be more of a cover 2 guy. Will come up and tackle. Good college player who will try to make it as an extra DB. Dante Barnes Norfolk St Has good size and decent speed. Is decent in coverage. Played well against tougher competition. With his size and speed combination he could also get some consideration at S. Developmental prospect who will likely be undrafted. Travon Bellamy Illinois Has good size and decent speed. Is physical. Doesn't always have tight coverage and will give up a number of catches. Even when he does have tight coverage he fails to make plays on the ball and gives up catches. Is a good tackler and might get a look at S. Missed 2007 with a shoulder injury. Good college player who might struggle to make it. Brandon Bing Rutgers Has decent size. Has good overall athletic ability. Has good speed and has some explosiveness. Athleticism doesn't translate onto the field because he plays with poor technique. He struggles in coverage and doesn't show very much closing ability. Player with good ability who will be a developmental type. Niles Brinkley Wisconsin Has marginal size. Play is really inconsistent. At times he will be solid but most of the time he struggles. Lacks elite speed and doesn't display good closing ability. Is stiff and is a little slow in transition and will give up a lot of catches. Is not overly physical or stout. Has struggled with hamstring issues throughout his career. Doesn't seem to be a lot of upside. Could get a look as an undrafted guy but might struggle to stick. Ramon Broadway Arkansas Undersized player with good raw athleticism. Has good speed and can really jump. Doesn't really translate onto the field though. He competes and will make plays on the ball. He is physical but struggles with his size. Really struggles with bigger physical receivers (and there are a number of them in the SEC). He is a little stiff and gets high when he is flipping his hips. Gives too much cushion. Has some ability but struggles to put it all together on the field. He does contribute on special teams. Dislocated in ankle this past season. In 2009 he was arrested for failing to take care of a traffic violation. Chykie Brown Texas Has good size and athletic ability. Really good workout performer with good speed and jumping ability. Some of it translates onto the field but not all of it yet. Is a physical player who will come up against the run. Lacks strength and will miss some tackles and at times will really struggle to get off blocks. Flashes good ability in coverage. Can run and has good coordination. Often though he plays too high and really saps his athleticism. It makes him really slow in transition and at times he will give up a number of catches. Is a little stiff in the hips and struggled some in field drills at the combine. Missed a number of games this past season due to a broken forearm. Has good ability and has a lot of upside. If he can improve his technique he could compete for a starting role down the road. Curtis Brown Texas Has good height but lacks some bulk and strength. Is an outstanding athlete. Runs well, can really jump and shows tremendous closing ability. Has good change of direction and really good hands. Shows all this in practice and in the combine drills but this doesn't completely translate onto the field during the game. In the game he can be a little slow to react and struggles to find the ball. Has all the ability to be a lock down type corner but will give up a number of big plays. Struggles with strong, physical players. Doesn't have bulk or strength to hold his position and he is also a below average tackler. Has tremendous ability, just needs to figure out how to put that on the field. Working in his favor is the fact that he is a really good special teams player so he will be able to contribute while he tries to figure it out. Jalil Brown Colorado Has a good combination of size and speed. Is a pretty fluid athlete. Is physical at the line of scrimmage and has good feet. Has good coverage from the press position when he can get his hands on the receiver. Struggles some in the off position because he plays too high and struggles a little in transition. Will get beat from time to time on double moves but he shows some closing speed. Is a good tackler and does a solid job against the run. Doesn't have good hands. Solid college player who has the ability to develop into a #2 corner down the road. Kendric Burney North Carolina Undersized corner who is strictly a cover 2 guy. Has outstanding quickness and anticipation. Blanket receivers and runs routes for them in short to intermediate areas. Despite lack of height he has such tight coverage that he doesn't play undersized. Really lacks speed and can't run with anyone. Is aggressive and can be beaten with double moves. Sometimes his aggressiveness will take him out of some plays or will cause him to lack game awareness like it did against Duke this past season. Has good hands. Is physical and will come up and make tackles against the run. Needs to be in the right system to have a chance. Brandon Burton Utah Has good Size and athleticism. Plays smaller than he actually is. Has really good feet and change of direction. Has quick feet and flashes closing ability. Will make plays on the ball and is a willing tackler. Really good special teams player. Dominated much of his competition but really struggled against better competition, especially big receivers. Michael Floyd and Austin Pettis ate him up. Really needs to improve in order to be more that a nickel back. Right now is a better athlete than corner but has the potential to develop into a starter down the road. Mario Butler Georgia Tech Has good height but could use more bulk and strength. Really competes. Typically has good coverage. Has some closing ability and will make plays on the ball. Lacks long speed and is a little tight in the hips but has good understanding of where he should be. Isn't afraid to be physical and will come up against the run. Lack of strength and bulk are a problem but if he can get bigger and stronger he could be more effective. Has an outside chance of developing into a starter but should be a good extra DB, especially with his competitive spirit. Rashad Carmichael Virginia Tech Has decent but not great size. Very experienced and shows good instincts. Good athleticism with good hips and change of direction. Will make plays on the ball. Isn't overly physical and looks more like a zone guy versus a man to man guy. Inconsistent tackling and playing the run. Doesn't always do a good job with outside contain. Has some ability and could develop into a decent starter in the right system but either way he figures to be a solid nickel back. Chimdi Chekwa Ohio St Has good size and athletic ability. Runs really well and has decent feet. Is a little tight in the hips but not horrible. Is a little inconsistent in coverage at times getting turned around. Has a tendency to bite on play fakes. Other times he shows really good coverage and is able to make plays coming off his guy. Isn't overly physical but does an ok job against the run. Might be a little injury prone. Has dealt with numerous nagging injuries throughout career and is now trying to recover from a broken wrist. Has the ability to develop into a starter down the road if he can be more consistent. Vance Cuff Georgia Undersized corner who was never really able to secure a starting spot. Really lacks bulk and struggles to hold his ground. Struggles against the run because of his size but he gives good effort. Has good athleticism and can be good in coverage. At times he plays a little high and struggles in transition. Never took his game to the level I thought he could. Has some ability and could be a nickel back/special teams player but will likely go undrafted. Phillip Davis Tulane Undersized corner who has good feet and some quickness. Makes plays on the ball. Really lacks height and doesn't have elite speed or good strength. Might be a little overwhelmed on the next level but might be worth a look. Dionte Dinkins Ft. Valley St Has really good size. Has marginal speed but also has enough size to move to S if needed. Dominated his level of competition but will be making a huge jump in competition. Interesting developmental prospect who will likely go undrafted but could go late in the draft if a team falls in love with him. James Dockery Oregon St Tall and lanky player who could use some more bulk. Is a little stiff and really struggles to turn and run with receivers. Much more comfortable playing back so that everything is in front of him. Gives too much cushion and doesn't show great closing speed. Has decent overall speed and has decent hands. Didn't take his game to the next level this past season and looked very average. Missed 2008 with a knee injury. Likely will get a shot as an undrafted guy. Ras-I Dowling Virginia Has really good size and has shown good athletic ability. Is tall and has long arms. Runs well. Had a really good 40 time at the combine despite pulling his hamstring. Doesn't always play to that speed but has good speed, especially with his height and length. Shows good closing speed. Is a better athlete than football player. At times will struggle a little in coverage, giving too much cushion or struggling to track the ball. Is extremely injury prone. Has struggled with a lot of injuries the past two years, this past year in particular. Dealt with hamstring, ankle and knee injuries all season, including the combine. Lower body injuries are not a good thing for CBs. Looks the part of an ideal CB but is a serious boom or bust player. Desia Dunn Fresno St Lacks size and isn't overly athletic. Is tough and will come up against the run and will make a lot of tackles on special teams. Has decent coverage in short areas but doesn't run real well and is more of a cover 2 guy. Might lack the athleticism needed for the next level but might still be worth an invite. Anthony Gaitor Florida International Really undersized guy who wasn't tested much. Has good quickness and closing ability. Has good change of direction and is solid in coverage. Has good hands for the INT. Despite size he is not afraid to be physical. Really lacks size and will be making a jump in competition and will be tested consistently but has ability and could be a good nickel back. Josh Gatlin North Dakota St Has really good size and is really athletic. Has elite speed and jumps well. Has all the measurables you would expect from a top prospect. Is really raw and doesn't show much on the field at all. Lacks strength and didn't show much against lower level competition. Won't get drafted but someone will give him a shot as a developmental prospect due to his physical abilities. Carl Gettis Missouri Has decent size. Has good feet but marginal speed. At times has good coverage but at times he will struggle some. Has a tendency to bite on play fakes and he isn't athletic enough to recover. At times he will drift some in coverage and get himself out of position. Does a decent job coming up and tackling but doesn't always take good angles against the run. Decent college player who needs to be more consistent in order to make a roster. Marcus Gilchrist Clemson Has experience at both CB and S and could get a look at either position. Has decent size for CB but might be a little undersized for S. Is really physical, which makes up for his lack of size. Can jam a receiver at the line of scrimmage which helps make up for his good to average speed. Good tackler who makes plays against the run. Is good in coverage and shows good change of direction. Is a decent return guy. Not elite in anything but is solid in all aspect of the game and figures to be a solid pro. Marcell Gipson Wyoming Undersized guy who isn't afraid to be physical and has decent strength. Has quick feet and marginal speed. Does a decent job in coverage and will come up against the run. Won't get drafted but could get a look as a nickel back and special teams player. DeJon Gomes Nebraska Has good size. Good athlete but has marginal speed. Could get a look at S because he has good size and is a good tackler. Could stay at CB though because he has decent closing speed. Is around the ball and will make plays on the ball. Forces a number of turnovers, either by INT or forced fumble. He is decent in coverage and is a little underrated, especially due to the fact that if he doesn't make it at CB he could easily fit at S. Darian Hagan California Has decent height but lacks bulk. Is fairly physical. Has good athleticism but has marginal speed, especially for someone who lacks bulk. Doesn't always trust himself and will at times make penalties when he doesn't need to. Is decent in coverage but at times will give up a number of catches. Is pretty good at blitzing from the corner. Solid college player who could battle for an extra DB spot. Brandon Harris Miami (Fla) Has good size and athleticism. Shows really good speed and closing ability. Is not afraid to be physical and is a decent tackler. Has good feet and good hips. Will make plays on the ball. Former track guy who really has a lot of ability. His play was not consistent this past season. Looks like a potential first round pick but will need to be more consistent in order to be a solid starter on the next level. Chris Harris Kansas Is a tweener. Lacks size for S but also lacks athleticism and closing ability for CB. Plays the game more like a S. Will come up and makes plays against the run and is a decent tackler. Really lacks height and can struggle with tall receivers. Undrafted guy who will get a chance to compete for an extra DB position. Stephen Harrison Kansas St Has decent but not great size. Really improved this past year to get himself on the radar a little. Lacks elite speed and closing ability but typically had really tight coverage. He competes and will battle the receiver. Average against the run. Won't get drafted but might get a shot as an extra DB. Ryan Hill Miami (Fla) Has good size and long arms. Has decent athleticism but has marginal speed. Is physical. Has a little experience at S and could get a look there or it could just be his backup plan for if he struggles at CB. Doesn't have a lot of experience at CB so he still needs some development. Missed 2009 season due to a shoulder injury. Has some potential so figures to be a mid to late round developmental prospect. Tarvoris Hill Florida Atlantic Really skinny and could use a lot more bulk. Is a little stiff in the hips and high in his backpedal. Often has decent coverage but at times will give too much cushion. Is physical but is also an injury concern. Has broken the same forearm a couple times in the last couple of years. Undersized corner who might get a shot. Brandon Hogan West Virginia Has good size and is really physical. Is a big hitter and can separate the ball from the receiver. Has good athletic ability and shows good hips and change of direction. Has good speed. Can be really good in coverage but is also really aggressive and will bite on plays and end up in no man's land. Is a decent punt return guy when he catches the ball. He lets too many hit the ground but when he does have the ball in his hands he shows good quickness and toughness. Played much of the past year through a biceps injury. In the regular season finale he tore his ACL. So he hasn't been able to fully workout for scouts and may be a bit injury prone. Also complicating his stock is his off the field concerns. Was suspended for the bowl game in 2008 and missed spring practices this past year due to academics. In the past year he has been either arrested or cited for two alcohol related incidents. Had the look of a top half of the draft type prospect but with the injury and off the field issues, he might fall to the second half of the draft. Davon Cook New Mexico St Has good size and long arms. Plays a trail technique and is hard to throw over. Has really good speed. At times he will bite on play fakes but typically has the speed to recover. Has put on good weight this past year and hasn't lost any athleticism. Really good change of direction. Will make plays on the ball. Has the ability to be a great CB in the NFL but figures to struggle initially. Has a tendency to overconfidence in his abilities and will get sloppy and lazy with technique and ready cues. Could get away with it on his level but won't in the NFL. His success will be determined by how he responds to this initial struggle. With his athleticism and potential it wouldn't surprise me if a team rolled the dice on him in the second round. |
